Before hiring any interior design firm or local carpenter. we curious to ask about the material names, types, cost and it properties. what they going to use in our Modular Kitchen; particularly plywood’s. Let see what all the best material for Modular kitchen cabinets and shutter.
- Moisture Resistant Plywood (MR or Commercial)
- Boiling Water Resistant Plywood (BWR)
- Boiling Water Proof Plywood (BWP plywood)
- Wood-Plastic composites (WPC)
MR Ply is very cost effective. Avoid use in bottom cabinets. But can be use in wall cabinets, Tall units, pantry units etc. Its grade is IS303.
BWR ply cost is 1.5 times higher than MR ply. Most of the carpenter’s call this as marine plywood; so ask them whether it is BWR or BWP. Actually, it is not marine plywood. Its grade also IS303.
BWP ply cost is 1.25 times higher than BWR ply. it used for external purpose not interior work. This is the actual marine plywood; used in ship building. Its grade is IS710.
WPC is new material for modular kitchen. it used only in exterior only. its expensive than BWP. actually, is not necessary to use in interior work.
If it is semi modular kitchen, MR ply is enough for both Cabinet and shutters. because there will be concrete bed between counter-top and cabinets. water contact with cabinet is very rare.
If it is Full modular kitchen, go for BWR ply for both cabinet and shutter. because counter-top and cabinets will have direct contact.
Additionally, most of the brand companies uses MDF only. If we maintain well, MDF also have longer life.
Note: In case of budget concern, you can have BWR ply for Bottom cabinets alone. rest of the areas like tall cabinets, wall cabinets, loft you can use MR ply.
